Dr Oz, Trust and the Government

I stopped giving much credence to Dr. Oz some time ago due to the barrage of fear factor about food and ‘life’. As a recurring look at food safety, it’s something we’re concerned with, like most people. The modern testing means we find things now that used to not be. Does it mean it wasn’t there? No it means we never looked to know if it was or was not.

I’ve been following the comments on this yahoo story following Dr. Oz’s latest criticism of apple juice having arsenic in it. They seem to be largely from several key points. One, like us, doesn’t think fearing food is the way to go. Another group may or may not believe him but states it was about imported apple juice and why are we importing what we can produce here. *Sigh* if they only knew/paid attention!

Then there’s another group that believes him but does so because they DON’T believe the USDA or FDA. Now this one puzzles me. Intrigues me. I don’t trust the government completely but to believe someone else because you don’t believe the USDA…really?

So my questions are many. If the FDA issues a recall and you have the item do you eat it anyway? After all they can’t be believed or trusted! If the USDA says that something is tested at a certain amount of protein (food nutrition labels) do you believe that? If you eat produce or food that you grew do you have it tested? If not how do you know it doesn’t have contaminants on it?

In the height of the egg issue many said home produced eggs don’t have salmonella – only those big farms. Guess what – it is everywhere. There are some types of salmonella – like some types of e.coli – that we need to survive! So wiping out all is harmful to our health.

The food myths are many. If the USDA isn’t to be trusted then why do consumers demand more testing? If they’re lying now will they lie more? If they’re not lying now then what changes?

There are many things consumers misunderstand about food – and many things farmers misunderstand about processing. When there are enough people involved and no one understands what the others are doing there will be misunderstandings, mistrust and fear. Let’s have a conversation folks!

Food is too important to not make decisions about. Fear doesn’t allow for open decisions.

    I can’t stand fear mongering. You’re not doing people any favors by scaring them into thinking a certain way. I always try to do my homework on a subject before I take a stance on it, even if it means what I thought in the first might turn out not to be true.

    I liken what you’ve said here to what we see in the news about sports related concussions. You see rules, especially in the NFL, changing to protect players from injury. Now that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but are there really more concussions occuring or are we just better able to detect concussions that would have gone undiagnosed previously?

    One last thing. What’s up with that oil filter in the pruning picture? LOL

      seeing if anyone was paying attention! 😀 Good eye!! Set it up last year when snipping rosemary (it’s on a solid surface, not soil).

      Fear reduces initiative and communication. I think if we’re going to have a discussion about food then fear needs to be at a low enough level to allow *communication* – listening AND talking. We can’t tell people there will be no more food issues because there may be. On the other hand many are caught because of testing…tests that prevented many from getting sick.
