Flavor Oatmeal for Taste, Health

Oatmeal is a nutritious food that helps lower cholesterol as well as offers a “stick to your ribs” breakfast. The problem is many people are tired of the taste quickly. This means that a variety of tastes are needed.

January is even dedicated to oatmeal as designated oatmeal month. There are also designations for oatmeal day and even oatmeal cookie day.

Having a variety of tastes then helps to insure that oatmeal remains tasty for several mornings per week. Here are a few ways to try oatmeal as a part of a healthy breakfast diet.

As a hot cereal try oatmeal with brown sugar or brown sugar and cinnamon. Cinnamon also adds healthy options to the oatmeal. Honey is another tasty way to keep oatmeal fresh tasting. Try maple syrup or a tablespoon of chocolate chips or chopped nuts. All of these can add taste and many options add nutrition as well.

A variety of fruits from raisins to strawberries to peach bites can also add to the taste of oatmeal. Some serve hot oatmeal with milk and this can open options to another dairy product – a scoop of ice cream.

There are a wide variety of options here that can be tailored to individual tastes for a hot breakfast. Of course oatmeal isn’t just for breakfast!

Consider making homemade granola to taste. Who doesn’t like oatmeal cookies – like the hot cereal these can include honey, chocolate chips, cinnamon, nuts or maple syrup. This can be oatmeal as a snack, broken over ice cream or as an on-the-run extra treat.

Oatmeal can also be added to other dishes from hamburgers and meatloaf to sloppy joes and chili. Add it to muffins and spice cakes. Oatmeal can even be added to brownies for a nutty taste covered by the chocolate in the brownies.

Oatmeal is a versatile, healthy and nutritious item that can serve as part of breakfast, snacks, lunch or dinner. It’s also inexpensive and easy to fix with instant oatmeals and quick cooking oats.

Making oatmeal tasty can mean simply looking at your personal tastes and finding a way to include it. This can even mean using jams, jelly or other foods to add taste. Some use berry ice cream toppings to stir in to oatmeal or any of these can be used on oatmeal muffins, bread or scones.

Irish pancakes also can make use of oatmeal. Irish and Scottish cookbooks often make extensive use of oatmeal in a variety of ways.

Popular “heat and eat” meals of pre-packaged oatmeal with flavors in them that you add a cup of boiling water to are convenient but organic or quick cooking oats take little more effort to make at a lower cost and with more options. Be creative – look for ways to sneak oatmeal in meals and snacks. It’s tasty and good for you!
