15 Ways to Enjoy Chocolate Chip Day

August 1, 2014

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOne of the favorite cookies of many is chocolate chips. The commercials of “TollHouse” cookies are enough to get us thinking there’s no other comparison. This is just one way to enjoy chocolate chips – which have an official designation of National Chocolate Chip day.

Here’s some ways to pay tribute to the chocolate chip:

  1. Chocolate chip cookies – of course!
  2. Chocolate chip ice cream
  3. Chocolate chip muffins
  4. Chocolate chip pancakes
  5. Chocolate chip cake with cream cheese frosting
  6. chocolate chip trail mix
  7. Chocolate cherry cake with chocolate chip frosting
  8. Rocky Road Chocolate Chip bars
  9. Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
  10. Peanut butter Chocolate Chip Crescents
  11. Chocolate Chip cake
  12. Maple bacon chocolate chip cookies
  13. Granola chocolate chip cookies
  14. Chocolate chip scones
  15. Magic cookie bars

The estimate for chocolate cookies eaten in America is 7 billion annually and half of those made at home are chocolate chip. Chocolate chip cookies were “invented” in the 1930s at a bed and breakfast by breaking up chocolate bars and putting into cookie batter. Trial and error resulted in a winning combination.

Today chocolate chips appear in desserts and snacks as well as breakfast – quick and easy to sprinkle over ice cream, oatmeal and waffles. Most chocolate chips are made of milk chocolate although chocolate itself can be white chocolate, dark, and milk chocolate.

Some studies claim that moderate amounts of chocolate can lower blood pressure. Cacao, from which chocolate is derived, has been grown in Mexico and central and South America for centuries. It was originally drank much as hot chocolate or in an alcoholic type of drink. Mechanical mills and processing make chocolate treats today easier and tastier than ever.

It is very important to keep chocolate chips – like all chocolate – away from dogs and cats. They cannot process the theobromine and it is toxic to pets. The darker the chocolate the more toxic it is, so be sure to keep these treats for people only and out of pets reach.

Enjoy chocolate chip day and these recipes throughout the year!
